Primary Solidification Wizard

This wizard should guide you to set up a solidification simulation with globulitic growth of a first solid phase. It is designed to set up an alloy using a thermo-dynamic database.

Database choice and alloy definition

According to the database choice, the elements in the periodic table will be highlighted and can be chosen for an alloy definition. Provide the according initial concentrations in liquid in weight percent.

Note
Opening the wizard can take a few seconds to find the available databases in your environment. The databases from the default Thermo-Calc version (see App Configuration) will be listed.

Databases TCFE13 and MOBFE8, alloy definition Fe 1wt% C 1wt% Mn

Phases

The available phases are listed according to your database choice and alloy definition. Choose your phases of interest starting with the matrix phase (liquid). Mark the first solid phase to generate a nucleation condition using the seed density model for this phase.

Database phase list and chosen phases liquid, BCC (primary solid) and FCC

Generate Thermo-Calc macro for a GES5 file

After choosing the phases, all data is available to write a Thermo-Calc macro for GES5 file generation. Button Generate Thermo-Calc macro will write this macro. Save it in your working directory and check your run configuration for the correct Thermo-Calc version and press Start to generate the GES5 file.

It is recommended to check the output thoroughly for errors and fixing them. The given macro is just a start to get a valid and useful GES5 file for a MICRESS simulation. Nevertheless, this first version will be valid in most of the simple cases.

Note
The Thermo-Calc GUI will be started under Windows. The console application will be used under Linux.

Phase interactions

Phase interactions will be enabled here. It is possible to include also interactions for later use. The according parameter blocks will be included in the generated driving file.

Phase interactions between liquid and the defined primary solid BCC are enabled

This is the last page of the wizard. All follow up driving file parameters will be filled with default values.

Check driving file

The button Check Driving File will be enabled on the last page of the wizard (phase interaction).

Pressing it will write a driving file according to your settings. Save it in your working directory. This driving file will only contain the raw parameters for MICRESS. Run it with MICRESS and mirror the IN file to the driving file (Button IN->DRI) to get the usual input look and feel with comments.

This first solidification setup should serve as a starting point for your modifications.
